The Misericordia Society was founded by Italian immigrants and brought to St. Louis about 100 years ago. It's purpose was to preserve the Italian culture and Catholic faith of the immigrants. It also promoted and encouraged participation in the community through civic improvement and charitable contributions.
Mission Statement (taken from the bylaws)
We, the members of the Misericordia Society wish to preserve the Italian and Italian-American heritage by promoting the art, customs, history, music, language, technology, and traditions of the culture. We are also committed to honoring our patron saint, Maria SS Della Misericordia (Our Lady of Mercy), by performing charitable works in her name and by demonstrating our devotion to her through religious ceremonies.
We encourage all members to participate in bringing about civic improvement in the community, and we pledge to uphold the prestige of people of Italian heritage. We will work toward eliminating prejudice and misunderstanding of Italian-Americans, and people of all nationalities and ethnic backgrounds.
